The excitement is palpable. Latin America and the Caribbean have the potential to lead the world in the production and use of Hydrogen. Now the rubber needs to hit the road. Over the course of three deeply interactive days, we explored what steps the region needs to make to fulfill that potential.
The H2LAC agenda had three distinct components.
Upstream (April 14). For the LAC region to win, we need to find a way to produce Green and Blue Hydrogen at the right price, and with the infrastructure to store and distribute it. What are the economics? How do we harness baseload and intermittent renewables to produce Green Hydrogen? Does an approach which combines Green and Blue Hydrogen production make sense for gas-producing countries in the region? Is Hydrogen the key to decarbonizing Latin America oil and gas industry?
Downstream (April 15). How do we create a market for Hydrogen? Can Hydrogen transform and decarbonize the region’s transportation, petrochemical and other heavy industry sectors? Can hydrogen help drive the clean energy transition across LAC?
LAC Hydrogen Government Roundtable (April 22). All H2LAC attendees were invited to participate as observers in the Latin America & Caribbean Hydrogen Government Roundtable, hosted by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Gathering senior government officials and regulators from every country in the region, the round table sought to gauge progress towards national planning for a hydrogen economy, and what inputs are required from the DFIs and the private sector to catalyze progress at a national level.

Cabildo Abierto | Town Hall Discussion
BP’s chief economist recently stated that the lowest level of overall emissions in 2050 would be achieved by using roughly equal amounts of natural gas-based blue hydrogen and renewable energy-based green hydrogen.
· What opportunities are there for baseload & intermittent RE to power H2 production?
· For gas-producing countries, is blue a natural long-term transition to green?
· Can we repurpose existing infrastructure to enable existing suppliers/distributors of gas to make the transition?
· Should policy and regulation, or free markets and location, define the type of production?

As countries set aggressive carbon neutral targets, it is of paramount importance that we look for innovative ways to power society without emissions and provide solutions to rapidly enable decarbonization across the utility, industry and community sectors. Using a power to power strategy to replace expensive, high emission power grids with renewable, baseload, and cost-effective zero-carbon grids powered by hydrogen, we explore a pathway to producing, transporting and re-electrifying hydrogen to displace baseload diesel and coal as a key factor for a sustainable and equitable energy model for the future.
