Turks and Caicos Islands in first stages of drafting new energy strategy plan

The Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) government, Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) and FortisTCI, the islands’ power company, have signed an agreement to start planning a Resilient National Energy Transition Strategy (R-NETS).

The focus of this new energy strategy will be to modernise the electricity sector in TCI, implementing new technologies to strengthen the islands’ resilience, as well as ensure an economic and environmentally sustainable future, whilst providing low-cost energy to customers across TCI.

The agreement follows a recently approved government policy for the implementation of integrated resource planning in the energy sector, which is currently in drafting stage to become legislation.

The process for the drafting of the R-NETS will be inclusive and fact-based, with public consultations already underway. “Creating a joint strategy is the right approach and serves as the first step toward modernising the electricity sector and expanding the energy mix in ways that are beneficial to all stakeholders” said FortisTCI President and CEO Eddinton Powell.
