Jamaica adds USD 1 billion LNG terminal

A new floating Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) terminal off the coast of Jamaica has placed the country “on track” to meet its energy mix target of 50% of energy sources from renewables or cleaner fuels.

The terminal was unveiled at a ceremony last week, attended by Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

“We are demonstrating that we can put in place the necessary investments, build infrastructure that both reduces the cost to the consumer, but most importantly, reduces the cost to the environment”, said Prime Minister Holness.

United States company, New Fortress Energy, was commissioned to build the terminal for nearly USD 1 billion.

Jamaica “had the political will for the change that is necessary to switch from distillate fuels to a cleaner, brighter and more environmentally friendly future”, said CEO of New Fortress Energy Wes Edens. “Jamaica is now a model for the rest of the Caribbean. (…) This is another way station on the journey that for us begins in Jamaica and is spreading around the Caribbean and the rest of the world.”

This terminal is the first of its kind in the Caribbean.
