Geothermal power plant in Costa Rica to start operating this month

A new geothermal power plant in Costa Rica, the sixth in the country, will enter into commission this month.

The Pailas II geothermal power plant will add 55MW to the installed geothermal energy capacity of 207MW.

This project will generate enough energy for an estimated 55 000 homes, and electricity will be provided at a competitive cost.

This power plant comes after the announcement of a project of law, the “Law of Use of National Energy Resources”, which aims to eliminate some of the limitations to energy exploitation, including geothermal.

According to Javier Orozco, ICE’s director of Planning and Electrical Development, new technology should allow for an increase in geothermal generation without affecting the country’s protected natural areas and minimising environmental damage.
