Central America makes uneven progress in clean energy

Despite a decrease in dependence on fossil fuels and an increase in access to electric power in Central America, progress in the region varies dramatically from country to country.

Diego Fernández, researcher at the State of the Region Programme (PER) of the Consejo Nacional de Rectores (CONARE). says that between 2000 and 2013, average electrification rates have climbed from 69% to 90%.

While these statistics are impressive, some countries have not seen this progress. Nicaragua, for example, has 75% coverage. Costa Rica, which has a 99% electrification rate as sources 95% of that energy from renewable sources.
