Peru identifies sites for hydropower and wind potential

This week, Peru’s Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) released updated maps showing hydroelectric potential in the South and wind potential across the country.

The following basins were identified as having great potential for optimal electricity generation: Apurímac, Madre de Dios, Purús, Grande, Chili, Tambo and Titicaca.

This work was developed as part of the agreement signed between MEM and CAF-Latin American Development Bank, with funds from the program for the efficient and sustainable management of Peruvian energy resources (PROSEMER), also with the participation of the Inter-American Development Bank Development (IDB).

A updated map of Peru’s wind potential was developed with PROSEMER funds, which will be an important tool to promote investments in wind power.

It will also contribute to the evaluation of the use of wind energy for electricity supply in rural and isolated areas through the construction of small wind turbines, in places where wind speed is significant.
