Installation of PV modules begins on El Salvador’s largest solar project

The Providencia project in El Salvador is approaching completion with the placement of the first solar module onto the 101 MW plant. French developer Neoen divided the project into two blocks: a 76 MW PV plant, awarded in an 2014 auction, and a block of 25 MW which will provide electricity to distributors. The latter is the result of private negotiations with distribution companies. Investments in the Providencia project total approximately US$151 million; loans from the IADB, the Canadian Climate Fund, French development bank Proparco, and Neoen have thus far financed the project.
