Global Sustainable Blue Economy Conference kicks off in Nairobi

Today marks the start of the inaugural Sustainable Blue Economy Conference in Nairobi, Kenya.

The conference is hosted by Kenya, along with Canada and Japan and will see over 12 000 delegates discussing the opportunities and challenges which lie ahead for the world’s ocean economy. The conference will focus on how a blue economy -which provides hobs for hundreds of millions an generates trillions of dollars- can be successfully harnessed to improve the lives of people and meet sustainable goals.

The conference follows from the G7 meeting held in Canada, building momentum on the global commitments to focus on the preservation, restoration of the world’s bodies of water while developing opportunities for economic success.

The emphasis of the conference is also on global collaboration. As Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada’s Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard said: “The stakes are high, the time is short. Global environmental and sustainability challenges need global solutions.”
