Richard Paal studied Mechanical Engineering and Project Management and holds a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI). He has more than 25 years experience in Engineering, Project Management and Construction Supervision of Projects in the oil-, water- mining and electric utilities industry.

Since 2011, Richard has been working for the national electricity company from Suriname (EBS) as Engineering Manager, and has the responsibility for the delivery of the company’s capital plan. As of 2013 Richard has been the Program Manager for IDB financed projects in which several rural electrification components, including solar mini-girds in remote locations in Suriname are included.

Currently Richard also is the project manager for an EU/IDB financed project in which 10 solar mini-grids with a total capacity of 1,719 kWp are being constructed in rural areas in Suriname South America. This project will provide 24 hours per day, 7 days a week electricity access to 12 villages along the upper Suriname river through solar generation and installation of electric infrastructure. Six of the ten solar mini-grids are already in operation and are delivering 24/7 electricity service to the communities. The remaining four solar mini-grids are under construction and will be commissioned this year.
