Talal Kanaan

Talal is currently part of the core-team leading the technical engagement in energy storage at ESMAP, the global energy unit at the World Bank. At ESMAP, he co-authored the Guidelines for Planning and Implementation of Solar-Plus-Storage projects, while also supporting investment project planning and implementation in South Asia and the Middle East, with a focus on renewable energy and storage. Talal joined the World Bank in September 2021, initially as part of the Renewable Energy program and the Sustainable Renewables Risk Mitigation Initiative (SRMI) team. His work focused there on integrated approaches for scaling up effective deployment of renewable energy globally.

Prior to joining the World Bank, Talal started his career designing and implementing grid-connected solar PV plants for commercial and industrial applications in Canada. Later, he worked on advancing off-grid and hybrid solar PV systems in the Middle East and North Africa region, while advising various organizations including UNICEF, WHO, and GIZ in the context of renewable energy deployment for critical services in humanitarian and stabilization settings.

Talal holds a Master of Engineering from the University of Toronto focusing on energy systems, and a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Nottingham.
