Energy Specialist
Chong is an Energy Specialist at the World Bank, focusing on power system planning, energy storage, and the integration of variable renewable energy (VRE) and electric mobility. With over 10 years of hands-on experience in the power sector, he is currently part of the Energy LAC team, working specifically with Belize and the Eastern Caribbean. Previously, Chong co-led the ESMAP Energy Storage Program and managed the energy portfolio for the Maldives during his time at ESMAP, which is the knowledge unit of the Energy & Extractives Practice Group at the World Bank. During his career in the Bank, he contributed to various projects aimed at developing comprehensive energy sector strategies for small island developing states and Sub-Saharan countries. These projects focused on facilitating the energy transition and integrating cost-effective, sustainable solutions for VRE integration, and power system planning and operation strategies. Before joining the World Bank, Chong worked at LS Industrial Systems, specializing in power transmission and distribution. He holds a Ph.D. in power systems engineering, with a focus on VRE integration.
