Robbie Rambarran is a Guyanese healthcare executive who currently serves as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), the country’s largest medical institution.

Early Life & Education

A native of Essequibo, a proud country boy, Mr. Rambarran attended Sparta Primary and Anna Regina Multilateral Schools.

At 17, he moved to Georgetown to further his education in business and accounting, while working at the International Pharmaceutical Agency.

A tragic turning point came early in his career: at age 18, his father died following a motor vehicle accident, and after being ignored in a hospital emergency department—an experience that profoundly influenced his dedication to patient care.

Determined to make a difference, he pursued higher qualifications, including a Master of Business Administration, a Master of Healthcare Leadership, and additional certifications in project management, procurement, accounting, and supply chain management.

Career at GPHC & Beyond

2002: Joined GPHC as a Clerk in the Stores Department, gradually rising through roles like Stores Coordinator, Manager – Materials Management, Assistant Director of Finance, and Acting Director of Finance.

2015: Left GPHC due to contract non-renewal during a political transition; worked on several World Bank development projects (2017–2021) as a Procurement Specialist.

February 2021: Returned as Deputy CEO, before being promoted to CEO.

Leadership & Reforms

Under his leadership, GPHC has seen transformative changes; He is being touted as the architect of a modern Georgetown Hospital, which includes:

[i] Infrastructure Upgrade
[ii] Procurement of Modern Equipment,
[iii] Human Resources Capacity Building & Training
[iv] Operational Improvements, such as digitizing the lab, radiology, finance, HR, and medical records
[v] Expanding and introduction of new and specialized medical and clinical services

Service

He also serves on several Boards, notably as a Director of the Caribbean Corporate Governance Institute and Chairman of the Burns Memorial Presbyterian Church.
