Peru seeks to revive US$550 million electricity interconnection project with Chile

Peru plans to resume talks with Chile on a proposed 1,000 MW electricity interconnection between Montalvo and Kimal, aimed at facilitating cross-border power exchanges and making better use of Chile’s surplus solar and wind generation. A 2025 IDB-commissioned study estimated the 500 kV transmission project would require US$550 million in investment and could enable annual electricity exchanges of 3,600–5,700 GWh, strengthening energy integration between the two countries.
