Chile advances US$13 billion green hydrogen projects to power low-carbon copper mining in Antofagasta

Chile’s growing portfolio of green hydrogen projects, worth nearly US$13 billion, is targeting synergies with the mining sector to cut fossil fuel use and support low-carbon copper production. Major miners including Antofagasta Minerals, BHP, and Codelco are exploring applications such as fuel cells and dual combustion systems. In the Antofagasta Region, home to over half of Chile’s copper output, projects like the US$2.5 billion Volta and US$10 billion INNA aim to supply hydrogen and ammonia directly to nearby mining operations.
