Chilean utility Colbun has successfully produced its first green hydrogen molecule using a small-scale system at its Nehuenco gas-fired plant in the Valparaiso region. The test run is part of preparations for the system’s commissioning, which aims to replace grey hydrogen used in the plant’s cooling units. The green hydrogen plant, consisting of electrolysers, solar panels, and battery storage, will be entirely off-grid and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by nine tonnes annually. Construction is nearing completion, with the project expected to cost around US$1 million.
