Progress for Chile’s first geothermal plant

While geothermal is stalled in much of Chile, Enel Green Power is making headway on its Cerro Pabellón geothermal plant with an equipment delivery reported to include transformers and pipes and accessories for the plant.

ILS Chile coordinated the transport of 120 containers from the ports of Iquique and Antofagasta to the volcanic site in a total of 200 truckloads.

The cargo was delivered across the Atacama Desert, which was subject to temperatures as low as -15°C and as high as 39°C, alongside winds of up to 80 km/hr.

Cerro Pabellón will be the first geothermal plant in Chile, anticipated completion in 2017. Chile has an estimated 3,600 MW of geothermal potential.
