New Fortress boosts Jamaica’s LNG demand with new plant

A new gas-fired 150MW power plant in Jamaica is helping drive up local LNG demand in a boon for U.S.-based New Fortress Energy. The Jamalco plant is expected to boost the company’s portfolio, which saw the bulk of its US$50 million in quarterly sales come from Jamaica. New Fortress aims to increase its current Jamaican contracts for 600,000 gallons of gas per day up to 1.2 million gallons daily by 2020. Jamalco, which is part of energy-intensive bauxite and alumina operations, requires 285,000 gallons of gas per day to be fully operational. Currently, New Fortress operates as the only supplier of natural gas in Jamaica.
