USACE pioneers sustainable wood management in Puerto Rico

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Caribbean District is integrating responsible tree disposal management into its construction contracts in Puerto Rico. As part of the US$150.7 million Franklin Delano Roosevelt Avenue Bridge replacement project, removed trees are being repurposed at a sawmill instead of being sent to landfills. The initiative promotes sustainable wood reuse while improving water flow, reducing debris accumulation, and mitigating stormwater drainage.
