Top 10 Geothermal Countries Based on Installed Power Generation Capacity

ThinkGeoEnergy published a list of the top 10 geothermal countries in 2021 based on installed power generation capacity. Mexico is on the list at number six with no gain or loss of power generation capacity from the year before. Colombia is a geothermal-newcomer and helped contribute to the 2021 overall generation capacity of 15,854 MW by adding small-scale ORC units from co-produced oil. Since 2020, the overall power generation capacity has increased by 246 MW, with Chile having the second-largest increase in capacity. Other development projects are still in the works, like the Laguna Colorada pilot project in Bolivia, which will contribute to the overall geothermal energy generation capacity in 2022.
