St Kitts-Nevis making substantial advances on the energy front

St. Kitts and Nevis is taking strides to become the “first green country in the world”, said Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris at a recent geothermal forum organized by OECS and CARICOM. A power purchase agreement (PPA) has been completed and the Ministry of energy expects to have 5 MW of power being generated by Belle Vue wind farm by next year.

CREF 2016 speaker Minister Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd noted that with ongoing infrastructure development and construction, the demand for electricity will be increased by some 18 MW over the next 5 years. Exploration into geothermal is taking place in St. Kitts and French engineering firm, Teranov, has begun exploration in the Sandy Point area around Brimstone Hill. The Caribbean Island hopes that these efforts will be enough to supply the country with 100 percent of electricity from renewable sources by 2020.
