Solar PV project furthers rural electrification in Panama

The energy and water foundation acciona.org, the corporate foundation of ACCIONA, a global energy company, has brought electricity to 2.250 people in seven indigenous communities in Panama.

The Luz en Casa Ngäbe-Buglé project, the foundation’s first project in Panama installs solar home systems at lower costs than alternative lighting systems. Similar projects have already been successfully carried out in Mexico and Peru.

Beyond installing these electrical systems, the project has also set up a repair and installation service run by a local entrepreneur to better ensure the long-term sustainability of the project.

This project was implemented with the consent of the local authorities, including the Ngäbe-Buglé Indigenous Council. This inclusive approach is also took account of geographical and economical considerations, sidestepping the need to connect to a conventional electricity while still providing a reliable source of energy
