Rio de Janeiro launches 5 MW solar plant on former landfill, aiming to expand to 20 MW by 2028

Rio de Janeiro has inaugurated the Solário Carioca project, a 5 MW solar plant built on a former landfill in the Santa Cruz neighborhood through a partnership with C40 Cities and Germany’s GIZ. The US$8.3 million project will generate enough power for about 100 municipal schools and save the city around US$370,000 annually. Implemented via a public-private partnership, the initiative aims to expand to 20 MW by 2028 using other underutilized urban areas.
