OAS supporting renewable energy for sustainable communities

Ruth Spencer, owner of a 14-unit guest house in Antigua, cut her electricity bill by 75% by installing solar panels.

“If we don’t convert to green energy, nothing is going to happen here.  The poor are going to get poorer, because when people can’t pay their energy bills and have their electricity cut off, their children can’t study in the evening, and they’re more likely to hang out in the streets and get into trouble,” Spencer said.

The Organization of American States (OAS) has launched the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (EPCA), a small grant initiative to promote sustainable communities. This program supports projects that address challenges relating to rapid urbanization, including clean energy, energy efficiency, natural disaster resilience, waste management, water management and transportation. Grants are as large as $50,000.
