A new initiative aims to strengthen Caribbean energy resilience in the face of increasingly severe weather events. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) estimates that upgrading the Caribbean’s power systems could generate US$4.3 billion in benefits over the next 20 years by reducing recovery costs after extreme weather. To address the challenges of funding, technology, and expertise, the IDB has partnered with the UK’s Sustainable Infrastructure Programme (UKSIP) on a three-year technical cooperation program. This initiative will support seven Caribbean nations—Barbados, Belize, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname, The Bahamas, and Trinidad and Tobago—by improving disaster response capacity, regional energy integration, and financial instruments for quicker post-storm recovery.
