New energy storage solution for Bermuda

French company Saft will deliver a turnkey order to supply an energy storage system to the Bermuda Electric Company (BELCO).

The turnkey provided by Saft will help the system supply up to 10 MW power for spinning reserves, and to maintain grid stability.

This new project follows from the Electricity Act passed by the Government in Bermuda in 2016, which promoted the development of a long-term approach to energy, and included measures to improve energy efficiency, energy storage and renewables.

As the turnkey supplier of the energy storage system, Saft is responsible over the design, delivery, and installation of the ESS. It will also connect the system to BELCO’s grid.

The system’s high reliability, low operating costs, and guaranteed performance over the asset’s lifetime is a step forward for Bermuda’s energy storage improvements.

“The BELCO project continues a long series of successful energy storage deployments by Saft to support island grids since 2003”, said HervĂ© AmossĂ©, Saft Executive Vice President Transportation, Telecom and Grid. “Saft is committed to provide BELCO with a reliable and high-performance spinning reserve solution as an alternative to its generators.”
