New energy plan proposal for Bermuda, focus on offshore wind farms

BE Solar has released its ‘Bermuda Better Energy Plan’ (BBEP), in response to the Regulatory Authority of Bermuda (RAB)’s call for consultation on a new Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). This proposal, which presents itself as a better alternative to the original IRP by electricity utility Belco, is one of eight IRP alternatives that have been filed with RAB, and one of three plans which seriously propose renewables as the country’s main source of energy.

The BBEP aims for 64% of renewable energy by 2038, and emphasises the strides that can be made in the use of the islands’ local resources, particularly offshore wind energy, which would greatly reduce their reliance on imported fossil fuels.

The focus is also on achieving higher energy efficiency, increasing energy storage and making Bermuda “more resilient and competitive”.
