New Energy Events, the organizer of CREF 2019, has joined Climate Neutral Now, a UN Climate Change Secretariat initiative representing a global community of organizations committed to taking action to make our global society climate neutral by the second half of the 21st century. In signing the Climate Neutral Now Pledge, New Energy Events has committed to measure, reduce and compensate the greenhouse gas emissions related to CREF 2019.
“CREF’s underlying objective – to foster investment in clean energy in the Caribbean – may be virtuous but it is an undeniable truth that bringing 500+ delegates to an international event leaves a significant carbon footprint,” said Matthew Perks, CEO of New Energy Events. “Our ambition is to reduce this footprint as much as possible. However, for the part that we can’t avoid, we feel responsible to compensate it through offsets that represent high quality emission reductions globally, and also contribute to sustainable development at a local level. The UN program is the benchmark emissions program and we are pleased to support it.”
“Millions of people travel to and participate in events every year. The combined environmental and carbon footprint is significant. However, events are also ideally placed to raise awareness about the need to take action to address climate change and show leadership in doing so. We are happy to count CREF 2019 as a participant in Climate Neutral Now, and look forward to supporting New Energy Events in their efforts to measure and reduce the impact of their events, and compensate the rest”, said Niclas Svenningsen, Manager, Global Climate Action at the UN Climate Change Secretariat.
