Mexico’s Renewable Energy Revolution

Legislation in Mexico has created a positive growth environment for renewable energy industries. Following the collapse of oil prices last year, Mexico opened its power sector to the private sector to increase participation in power generation and commercialization. In March, the government bought 2.1 GW for US$2.6 billion and will seek to buy between US$2.6 to $2.8 billion more. Beginning in 2018, qualified consumers will have to show that they consume at least 5% from clean sources. Mandatory greenhouse gas emissions targets will require Mexico to cut emissions by 50% by 2050. Overall, policy at the federal level in Mexico is proving that the Latin American country has taken its COP21 commitments quite seriously.
