Mexico issues draft guidelines for second power auction

Mexico’s second clean energy power auction is scheduled to be held on September 30th of this year.

Recent nationwide reforms opened the energy sector for private investment. The move has been extremely popular with international players like Enel Green Power, SunPower and Recurrent Energy – all who won clean energy certificates (CLEs) under the first auction.

Guidelines for this auction dictate that the projects must begin delivering power through their contracts with CFE in 2019. This second auction hopes to  follow the success of Mexico’s first auction that took place in March and saw some of the lowest PPA prices globally; the average contract price was US$50.7 per MW/h. Mexico’s Secretary of Energy (SENER) has published draft regulations for the auction.
