Jamaica moves to join TAM-1 subsea cable network to strengthen digital infrastructure

Jamaica has signed a non-binding letter of intent with Trans Americas Fiber System to extend the in-development TAM-1 subsea cable to the island, adding a dedicated spur with up to 20 Tbps of capacity. The 7,000-km TAM-1 network will connect Florida with Central America and the Caribbean, passing about 220 km south of Jamaica. A final agreement is expected later this year, with construction planned for Q4 2026 and the Jamaica branch potentially operational by Q3 2027, strengthening the country’s digital resilience and economic competitiveness.
