Jamaica energy minister says acquisition of LNG significant

The arrival of LNG to Jamaica signals a significant effort to continue with diversification of energy sources on the Caribbean island. Already having the largest wind and solar installations in the English-speaking Caribbean, the Government is attempting to drive down the cost of energy and provide cleaner options to the people of Jamaica.

Minister of Science, Energy and Technology, Dr. Andrew Wheatley noted that the IMF has recognized Jamaica as having the “best government infrastructure in the Caribbean.” The arrival of LNG for the JPS power plant in Bogue, St. James, by American investor New Fortress Energy, is part of the continuing pursuit of alternative fuel sources – especially those that reduce the cost-burden of imported fossil fuels. Dr. Wheatley explained that with a diversification strategy, Jamaica hopes to meet its goal of 15 percent renewable energy by the close of  2017.
