IDB could finance waste-to-energy in Jamaica at the right price

The IDB has told Jamaica it would be willing to finance waste-to-energy, if the price is right. “We could finance waste to energy,” but “at the end of the day, it’s going to come down to the cost. I think that’s a key component which I don’t know if it has been fully analysed,” said lead investment officer at the IDB, Stefan Wright.

Solar energy is currently priced at $0.12/kWh in Jamaica, and waste-to-energy would need to come in around that price to be purchased by utility, JPS. The IDB is committed to financing renewable energy projects in Jamaica, but the project must make economic sense for the consumer to move forward.
