El Salvador: $49/MWh solar in latest auction to bring 170MW wind and solar

Five projects totaling 169.9 MW comprising solar and wind projects were awarded this week in El Salvador’s second renewable energy auction. Winning bidders included a 50 MW wind project at $98.78/MWh and 119.9 MW of solar PV projects ranging from $49.55 – $67.24.

According to El Salvador’s National Energy Board (CNE), the awarded projects will represent an investment of approximately $340m and the energy generated will serve the supply of approximately 288,830 Salvadoran households.

It is expected that the nation’s General Superintendent of Electricity and Telecommunications (SIGET) will review and approve all bids, which must be done no later than January 24 of this year. The 20-year contracts will be signed with each of the companies awarded no later than March 27, 2017.
