Drilling starts for Ecuador’s first geothermal energy plant

Ecuador’s first geothermal energy plant has started its first phase of construction, with drilling started on the Imbabura site a few days ago.

The project is financed by the Japanese government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency. The investment for the construction of the geothermal plant was of USD 250 million.

The Electric Corporation of Ecuador (Celec) commissioned the 50MW geothermal project.

Exploratory drilling start in March 2018, when temperatures of 235oC where recorded, ideal temperatures for generating geothermal power.

This project will help meet Ecuador’s growing energy demand with a stable energy and clean energy source.
