Dominica’s geothermal project bids come in over budget

Dominica’s geothermal project is facing a big roadblock – substantially higher project costs than anticipated. Following a September 2019 tender for the construction of a geothermal power plant on the island, three bids reviewed as valid all came in at prices significantly higher than estimates for project costs.

The project had previously secured sufficient funds for costs based on estimated provided by the World Bank, the European Union, and SIDS DOCK. Moving forward, the Prime Minister has announced a few options are on the table, including a possible tender termination to revisit plant designs. Further details are forthcoming.
