Dominican Republic inaugurates 1MW solar facility at airport

President Danilo Medina inaugurated a 1MW solar PV plant at a facility at the Las Américas International Airport last week. It is the second PV plant at an airport in the country. The other project, in operation since 2013, is a 1.5 MW PV plant at Cibao Airport.

The solar plant was installed at the Norge Botello aeronautical complex in Punta Caucedo, which belongs to the Dominica Institute of Civil Aviation. It is expected to generate about 1,500 MW/year.

This project contributes to the growing number of solar projects in the Dominican Republic. Under the net metering scheme, 1,601 renewable energy projects totaling 35 MW have been installed up to 2016, according to statistics from the National Energy Commission (CNE).
