Dominica is CARICOM forerunner in renewable energy use, latest ECLAC report reveals

Outcomes from a report by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) show Dominica as the CARICOM member that consumes the largest portion of its energy from renewable sources. The 2008 global financial crisis, and its aftershocks, incentivized the Caribbean island to pursue sustainable energy strategies that reduce dependence on fossil fuels and minimize vulnerability to price fluctuations. Dominica aims to become energy self-sufficient by 2020, utilizing the island’s geothermal potential in addition to hydro, solar and wind sources. Policies that support renewable energy technology development will benefit Dominica and its Caribbean neighbors, says the study, which is called: “Barriers to Identification and Implementation of Energy Efficiency Mechanisms and Enhancing Renewable Energy Technologies in the Caribbean.” The report also finds that those countries which have made the most efforts toward promoting energy efficiency have up to three policies currently implemented.
