Costa Rica adds inverters to its largest solar PV installation

Costa Rica has added ABB’s inverter technology to its 6.2MW solar PV plant to provide a reliable, clean and independent energy source to 10% of its country’s population.

Twenty eight of ABB’s PVS-175 inverters were added earlier this year to the solar energy farm, Proyecto Fotovoltaico Cooperativo.

This 19 000 panel installation supplies electricity to Coopelesca, a Latin American zero-carbon energy cooperative.

The solar plant and its new inverter technology will supply electricity for 5000 households, and help meet electricity demand for the largely hydro-reliant electricity supply.

Costa Rica aims to have 100% renewables energy sources by 2030, and being a carbon neutral state by 2050. Increasing the number of renewable energy projects, and ensuring their lasting quality and stability, is essential for meeting these goals.
