Construction starts on Chile geothermal plant’s 33MW addition

The construction of a third generation unit at Cerro Pabellon geothermal power plant in Chile which will add 33MW of new capacity started last week.

Construction is led by Geotermica del Norte SA, a joint venture between Enel Green Power Chile, and Chile’s state oil company Empresa Nacional del Petroleo SA.

An investment of USD 100 million will fund this expansion.

The station located in Chile’s Atacama Desert currently consists of two 24MW units. Once the third unit enters into operation, the plant will produce 600 GWh per year.

The expansion is expected to enter into operation in the second half of 2020.
