Colombia launches pilot program for electric vehicles

Colombia inaugurated its pilot program for electric vehicles with an aim to introduce nearly half a million EV’s in the market over the next decade. The Ministry of Mines and Unidad de Planeación Minero Energetica (UPME) published the plan on October 19, called Programa Piloto de Vehículos Eléctricos para el Sector Oficial or, “Electric Vehicles Pilot Program for the Official Sector”.

The pilot program will collect real consumption data from different vehicle brands, including BYD, Renault, BMW, and Kia. At the close of the 4 month-long pilot program, UPME hopes the data will provide the justification for a technology switch from conventional vehicles to EV’s. “At the end of this pilot, we will have financial models that will justify the benefits of this technology versus the costs of conventional technology, as a basis to promote the respective changes in the technology,” said CEO of UPME Ricardo Humberto Ramírez Carrero.
