Colombia announces plans for first renewable auction

Colombia’s Minister of Mines and Energy, Germen Arce Zapata, announced on Friday that the country will hold its first auction for large-scale renewable energy before the current government term ends.

The planned tender, which will negotiate contracts for solar, wind and biomass sources, should take place by May 27, 2018, when the next presidential elections will be held.

This will lay the foundations for the Colombian electricity system to consolidate as the first in Latin America and the eighth in the world in terms of sustainability, the minister said.

Further details about the auction and the bidding rules, however, were not revealed.
