An estimated two-meter rise in sea-level caused by climate change over the next few decades will leave many Caribbean residents and businesses with no choice but to rebuild or relocate.
“Approximately 1,300 km square metres of land area will be lost. That’s equivalent to Barbados plus Antigua & Barbuda plus St Vincent & the Grenadines, plus Anguilla,” St Lucia’s Minister of Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology Senator James Fletcher said.
In the Caribbean, even a one meter increase in sea-level would result in the relocation of five power plants, one percent of agricultural land, 21 airports 35 sea ports and nearly 600 kilometers of roads.
