Chile’s Antarctic Institute (INACH), supported by GIZ, the EU, and regional partners, is developing a pilot hybrid system of solar, wind, storage, and green hydrogen at the “Professor Julio Escudero” base on King George Island. The project aims to replace diesel with sustainable energy for electricity and heating, reducing the base’s carbon footprint while serving as a technical model for other Antarctic and remote installations. Implementation is planned for 2026–2027 following feasibility studies that confirmed hydrogen use is viable under Antarctic conditions.
