Chile grants first environmental license for US$423 million green hydrogen project in Calama

Chile has approved its first environmental license for a large-scale green hydrogen project, granting Susterra permission to build a US$423 million facility in the Calama mining district of Antofagasta. The plant will initially feature 20 MW of electrolysis to produce nearly 9,000 kg of hydrogen per day, with plans to scale up to 200 MW producing almost 90,000 kg daily. The hydrogen will supply nearby copper mines, helping reduce fossil fuel use in mineral production, refining, smelting, and transport.
