A project aimed at reducing the consumption of fossil fuels in Antigua and Barbuda will be funded by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB). The Street Light Retrofitting Project will be supported by CDB financing of USD 5.9 million and a contribution of USD 905,000 from the Government of Antigua and Barbuda and the Antigua Public Utilities Authority. Replacement of approximately 14,400 high pressure sodium and mercury vapour street lamps, with LED lamps, will reduce annual energy consumption by 4,900 MWh and 3,200 tons of CO2 by the close of 2019. Daniel Best, Director of Projects for the CDB, explained that the Bank believes financing for this project will help the Government of Antigua and Barbuda reach its goal of a 30 percent reduction in energy consumption at public facilities by 2025. The Project aims for an annual reduction of 250,000 imperial gallons of diesel and heavy fuel oil imports by 2020.
