BP to ship first LNG cargo through Panama Canal

In late July the Panama Canal will add LNG to the commodities that pass through its locks. A US$5.3 billion expansion project aimed at getting giant-sized tankers from one ocean to the other will open a new trade route for heating and power-plant fuel. The Panama Canal Authority said the upgraded facility will look to ferry 20 million tons of LNG – the equivalent of 300 cargo ships – through its confines each year. BP is the first supplier to ship LNG via the canal; The British Merchant, with a capacity of 138,517 cubic meters of gas, will travel to the canal from Trinidad and Tobago. Petroleum and petroleum products are currently second highest among commodities that are transported between the Atlantic and Pacific.
