Barbados lone Caribbean country to purchase LNG from US

Amidst renewable energy growth in the Caribbean, Barbados is the lone country to import LNG from the U.S.

According to a United States Department of Energy report, Barbados imported 7, 432 million cubic feet (Mcf) of LNG during the period February 5 to April 29, 2016. The U.S. currently sells LNG to countries such as Argentina, Brazil, India, and United Arab Emirates at prices between US$3.35 to US$4.10 MMbtu, while Bridgetown paid as high a US$15.78 per MMbtu for the commodity. CARICOM’s biggest exporter of LNG, Trinidad and Tobago, sold the commodity to the U.S at US$6.70/mmbtu this year, raising the question of the need for a trade agreement between the two CARICOM countries.
