Albioma announces project commissioning for Martinique’s first biomass plant

Albioma, an independent renewable energy producer specialising in biomass and photovoltaics, announced the industry commissioning of the first 100% bagasse/ biomass plant in the French overseas departments.

Tests at the plant, Galion 2, began in January 2018. The plant uses mainly bagasse, a residue of sugar cane, to produce renewable energy, as well as other local forms of biomass and wood residues from sustainably managed forests. The steam released from the process is further used by the Galion sugar refinery, following the principle of circular economy also used in the company’s other thermal projects in Mauritius, Brazil, and other Overseas departments of France.

Once the plant is fully running, Martinique’s energy mix is expected to go from 7% renewable energy to 22%. With a capacity of 40MW, the biomass plant will supply electricity to Martinique’s grid year-round.
