Action plan to strengthen Blue Economy in Caribbean published by World Bank

A new World Bank report examines the importance of tackling marine pollution to ensure the Caribbean region is resilient to climate change.

The report, “Marine Pollution in the Caribbean: Not a Minute to Waste”, calls for urgent action to restore damaged ecosystems and protect the Caribbean’s marine resources. The ocean is a key source of food, and thus provides livelihoods and jobs to millions of people. Further fields are also dependent on marine resources, including tourism, fisheries and more.

“Effective management of plastics, solid waste, and wastewater are our top priorities to create a blue legacy for future generations”, said Tahseen Sayed, World Bank Country Director for the Caribbean.

The report does not only analyse the current trends and degradation of marine resources, but also lays out a careful plan to take action and reverse these trends. The aim is to transition towards a more sustainable Blue Economy, which generates growth sustainably, building resilience while preserving ocean resources.

As more and more countries become concerned with their Blue Economy, it is clear that marine pollution is not only an environmental issue: it is also an economic and social priority.
