Siemens has introduced a series of recommendations for a new energy infrastructure framework for Puerto Rico to increase resiliency of the national grid using cleaner and higher quality electricity. Siemens designed a program including 10 mini grids across the island that could potentially enhance and incorporate the energy infrastructure.
The company stated: “The mini-grid solution incorporates energy storage, renewables, and existing conventional infrastructure that will operate both connected to the grid as well as in island-mode in case of natural disasters.” Overall, the recommendations provided by Siemens, aim to protect the national grid from high impact events, reduce the dependence on centralised thermal resources, diversify energy sources, and improve the ability to store energy. By applying these series of recommendations Puerto Rico could increase renewables to 35%.
